Venus is the breeding ground for Astrophage, the alien microbe that is consuming the sun's energy and threatening all life on Earth. Without Venus's unique atmospheric chemistry, Astrophage cannot reproduce, making the planet the indispensable second half of the organism's life cycle and the logical target for any intervention to save the solar system.

Astrophage's Life Cycle and the Role of Venus

Astrophage follows a two-stage migratory life cycle. The organisms gather energy on or near the surface of the sun, storing it internally through a mass-conversion process that turns heat into physical mass. Once they have accumulated sufficient energy, they migrate to Venus, using infrared light as propulsion. The journey traces the Petrova line, a faint infrared arc that rises from the sun's north pole and curves toward Venus. At Venus, Astrophage encounters the carbon dioxide it needs to reproduce. The planet's atmosphere is 96.5 percent carbon dioxide at a pressure ninety times that of Earth, providing an overwhelming spectroscopic signature that the microbes can detect and follow. After breeding, both parent and daughter cells return to the sun to begin the cycle again.

The Breeding Mechanism

The breeding zone occurs at an atmospheric pressure of 0.02 atmospheres, approximately 70 kilometers above Venus's surface, where the temperature is minus 100 degrees Celsius. Grace's experiments confirm that the Taumoeba-82.5 strain can survive and thrive in Venus's atmospheric conditions, consuming Astrophage and breaking the reproductive cycle that sustains the infestation. The beetles Grace launches toward Earth carry sealed mini-farms of this Taumoeba strain, giving humanity the tool to finally eliminate Astrophage from the solar system.
